Where To Find Your E-Bike's 3 Serial Numbers
A regular bike has one serial. An e-bike has three that matter: the frame, the battery pack, and the motor. Thieves strip and sell the battery and motor separately, so recording only the frame number leaves the two most valuable parts untraceable. Here is exactly where each one sits.
Start with the frame serial
An e-bike's frame serial lives in the same places as any bike: stamped into the underside of the bottom bracket shell first, then the headtube or the rear dropouts. On many e-bikes it is also printed on a sticker on the down tube near the motor, or inside the battery cavity once the pack is out. This is the number that identifies the bike as a whole, so get it even if the sticker versions are easier to read.
Find the battery pack serial
The battery has its own serial, printed on a label on the pack casing — often on the underside or the end that seats into the frame, so you may need to remove the battery to read it. It is a different number from the frame serial. For some systems the battery serial also shows in the app or the bike's display: Bosch in the eBike Flow app, Specialized in Mission Control, Shimano in E-Tube, Giant in RideControl. Photograph the physical label as well, because a worn label is still evidence.
Find the motor or drive-unit serial
The motor unit carries a serial on its housing, usually underneath near the bottom bracket, so the bike needs to be upside down or on a stand. Bosch labels it as the Drive Unit number; Bafang stamps it on the side of the casing; Shimano and Yamaha print it on the underside. Mid-drive motors almost always have one; some hub motors do not, in which case note the make and model instead.
Check what the e-bike system already stored
Bosch (eBike Flow, or the older eBike Connect), Shimano E-Tube, Specialized Mission Control, Yamaha and Giant RideControl all record component identifiers against your account or the bike. Open the app, screenshot the component details, and keep it with your records — it is the easiest backup if a physical label is ever damaged or removed.
Can't get all three? Record what you have
The frame serial is the priority; add the battery and motor numbers when you can reach them. If a label is missing or unreadable, register with photos of where it should be plus the receipt or the manufacturer's app screenshot. A partial record with a dated proof of ownership is still far stronger than nothing.
